Topic Tank Tuesday: Barr Street Market

On this early overcast Saturday morning, Barr Street Market Square, always lovely, is dressed in a different shade of picturesque. It is silent, serene, entirely empty minus me and a lone walker wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark baseball cap. He isn’t drawn to the view as I am. His head is bent. He stares with fixed intent at the faded terra cotta tiles passing beneath his feet. But I recognize the gaze, the gait, the absent minded movement of hand to face, adjusting glasses—I’ve mirrored the movement a million times—he couldn’t tell you a thing about the tiles, I’m sure; he pretends to examine the ground, but really it is his soul.
